Today's NJCAA Men's Basketball Division I District 16 Play-in schedule

Monday, March 6, 2017

With 11 teams in NJCAA Men's Basketball Division I District 16 (a combination of Region's 12 and 24), the post-season tournament structure calls for three "play-in" games. Here's why.

Most tournament brackets work best when there is a field of teams numbering four, eight, or even 16. In the case of District 16, getting 11 teams down to eight is the ideal way to create an eight-team field for the tournament play while giving each of the 11 member teams a "shot at the title."

Therefore, the top five seeded teams go straight to the bracket of eight. The remaining six teams, by seed, get matched up to earn an advancement to the final three openings of the final eight.

The higher seeds of the aforementioned remaining six host a play-in game. To wit, the sixth seed hosts the eleventh seed, the seventh seed hosts the tenth seed, and the eighth seed hosts the ninth seed.

Here are tonight's match-ups for play-in games, the winners advancing to the aforementioned final eight set to begin tournament play March 8 at Waugh Gymnasium in Ina, Ill.

Each team's District 16 record is noted.
